To ensure the long durability and best performance of the air filter, it is important to take care of it properly.
Follow this step-by-step guide on how to quickly and easily clean and oil your air filter. Always use protective gloves when handling air filter cleaner and oil, as these substances are often hazardous to health.
1.
Start by cleaning your filter with a suitable air filter cleaner.
Let the filter soak in the cleaning solution for 3-5 minutes to dissolve the old filter oil and dirt.
Then work the filter with your hands in the cleaning solution to remove dirt and particles.
It is most important that the inside of the filter is completely free of dirt. Work out the air filter cleaner before proceeding to the next step.
NOTE! Do not use gasoline, paint thinner, or wash in a washing machine to clean your air filters as this can break down the glue that holds the filter together. These substances and methods significantly shorten the air filter's lifespan!
2.
Rinse the filter in warm water with a little dish soap to wash out the air filter cleaner and any remaining dirt. Rinse the filter thoroughly in clean water.
3.
Let the filter dry thoroughly by placing it on a piece of clean paper or cloth, or hang the filter to dry. If the filter is oiled before it is completely dry, you risk moisture getting trapped in the filter.
4.
Oil the air filter with air filter oil. Ensure the entire filter gets oil and spray/pour both inside and outside, then work the oil thoroughly into the filter with your hands.
NOTE! Remember to oil the filter well in advance of use so that the oil has time to dry and any solvents in the oil can evaporate.
5.
Press/squeeze out excess oil from the filter until a thin but even film of oil remains. You can advantageously squeeze the excess oil into a clean container for reuse next time.
NOTE! Do not wring out the filter as this can damage the glue joints in the filter. Squeeze and press out the oil, but avoid twisting the filter.
6.
Mount the air filter onto the air filter cage (if your bike has one, it is also a good idea to clean the air filter cage with brake cleaner or similar before installing the air filter). Then reinstall the filter in the airbox and make sure the filter is properly seated and seals tightly at the edges against the airbox.
